Six More Charged After Southampton Riots Over Henry Nowak Murder
Six more people have been charged in connection with violent disorder that erupted in Southampton following the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, Hampshire Police confirmed on Thursday. The charges bring the total number of suspects facing court proceedings to 19 since rioting broke out in the Thornhill area of the city.
The latest defendants, aged between 18 and 32, face charges of violent disorder and criminal damage. They’re set to appear before Southampton Magistrates’ Court next week. Among those charged is a 23-year-old woman from Thornhill and five men from various parts of the city.
Disorder Followed Teenager’s Death
The violence erupted late last month after Henry Nowak was fatally stabbed on February 28. Crowds gathered in the Thornhill estate, and what began as community grief quickly descended into chaos. Shops were damaged, cars set ablaze, and officers faced volleys of bottles and bricks.
Police made rapid arrests in the days following the disorder. But the investigation didn’t stop there.
Detectives have been reviewing hours of CCTV footage and social media posts to identify those involved. The painstaking work has led to a steady stream of charges, with more potentially on the horizon as investigators continue to piece together events from that night.
Community Still Reeling
Henry Nowak’s death has left the Thornhill community devastated. Friends described the teenager as popular and well-liked, someone who had his whole life ahead of him. Yet the riots that followed his killing have compounded the tragedy, leaving residents with damaged property and fractured trust.
A senior police spokesperson said: „We understand the community’s pain and anger, but criminal disorder cannot and will not be tolerated. We’re committed to bringing everyone responsible for the violence to justice while supporting those genuinely grieving this senseless loss.”
Murder Investigation Continues
Separately from the riot charges, two teenagers aged 16 and 17 have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Henry’s death. Both remain in police custody as detectives work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
The murder weapon hasn’t been recovered, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They’re particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the Hinkler Road area between 9pm and 10pm on the night of February 28.
Hampshire Police have said they expect further arrests in both the murder investigation and the disorder inquiry. The force has deployed additional officers to Thornhill to reassure residents and prevent further trouble. So far, that strategy seems to be working—the area has remained calm in recent days.
The first court appearances for riot-related charges are scheduled to begin next Monday, with proceedings expected to continue throughout the coming weeks.
