Queen meets JK Rowling to launch a week of royal engagements
The Queen kicked off a packed week of royal engagements on Monday by welcoming Harry Potter creator JK Rowling to Buckingham Palace, with the two women spending nearly 45 minutes discussing their shared passion for literature and the value of getting children to read.
A meeting built around books
It’s not every day a monarch and a bestselling author sit down for an informal literary chat, but that’s exactly what happened yesterday morning. The Queen, 96, received Rowling in the White Drawing Room — one of the Palace’s more intimate state rooms — and later told aides the conversation had centred on their “deep love of books” and why encouraging young readers matters so much in today’s world. Rowling, whose seven-volume Harry Potter series has sold more than 600 million copies worldwide, has long championed childhood literacy through her Lumos charity, which supports vulnerable children in 36 countries.
A Palace spokesperson said the meeting had been “warm and wide-ranging.” Still, officials kept the finer details deliberately vague, as is custom with private audiences.
What was said
The Queen described the pair’s exchange as a genuine meeting of minds. “They spoke at length about the importance of reading for children of all backgrounds and the role that storytelling plays in building empathy and imagination,” a senior royal aide confirmed. And while no formal statement was issued by either side, sources close to Rowling indicated she left the meeting “genuinely moved” by the Queen’s personal enthusiasm for fiction.
It wasn’t simply a photo opportunity.
The two also reportedly touched on the challenges facing public libraries across the UK, where more than 800 branches have closed since 2010 according to figures from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. That’s a conversation that goes well beyond pleasantries.
A busy royal week ahead
Monday’s meeting was just the opening act. The Queen is scheduled to carry out at least 12 official engagements before Sunday, including the State Opening of Parliament on Tuesday, a reception for Commonwealth heads of government on Wednesday evening, and a visit to a primary school in west London on Thursday — where, fittingly, she’s expected to read aloud to a class of 7-year-olds.
But it’s the Rowling meeting that has captured public attention first. Social media lit up within hours of the Palace announcement, with Harry Potter fans expressing delight at the pairing. The hashtag #QueenAndJK was trending in the UK by mid-afternoon.
What comes next
Royal watchers say this week’s schedule is one of the most ambitious the Queen has undertaken in recent months. Her diary had been lighter through the winter following a series of health concerns that kept her away from several planned appearances. So this week carries extra significance — a deliberate signal that she’s back, engaged, and very much in command of her diary. And if a shared love of books is how it starts, that’s not a bad beginning at all.
