Gavin and Stacey superfans snap up Bryn’s iconic Barry home

A devoted Gavin and Stacey couple have bought the Barry Island house made famous by Rob Brydon’s beloved uncle Bryn, fulfilling what they describe as a lifelong dream rooted in the hit BBC sitcom.

Matt and Claire Hodgson, from Banbury in Oxfordshire, completed the purchase of the three-bedroom semi-detached property on Trinity Street in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, last month for £187,500. The couple, both in their mid-thirties, said they had watched every episode of the show more times than they could count and jumped at the chance to own a piece of television history.

A house with serious screen credentials

The modest but instantly recognisable home served as the on-screen residence of Bryn West throughout the show’s original three-series run between 2007 and 2010, as well as the landmark Christmas special that aired on BBC One on Christmas Day 2024 and pulled in over 12 million viewers. It sits just streets away from the house used for Stacey’s family home, meaning the Hodgsons find themselves at the very heart of what fans have dubbed the Gavin and Stacey trail.

Matt, a secondary school PE teacher, said he spotted the listing on Rightmove at 11pm on a Tuesday and rang Claire immediately. She was already asleep. But he woke her up anyway. “She wasn’t even annoyed,” he told reporters. “She just said, right, we’re putting in an offer.”

‘Lush’ — the only word for it

The couple plan to use the property as a holiday let, at least initially, catering specifically to fans of the show who make the pilgrimage to Barry each year in their thousands. Barry Island itself has seen tourist footfall rise sharply since the Christmas special aired, with local businesses reporting a 30 percent uptick in visitors during January and February compared with the same period a year earlier.

Still, Matt insists the house won’t lose its soul in the process. They plan to keep original fixtures where possible and are considering adding subtle nods to the show throughout the interior — nothing too gaudy, just enough to make a fan feel at home.

Barry is more than a backdrop

A spokesperson for Vale of Glamorgan Council said the ongoing interest in filming locations across the area had brought genuine economic benefit to local communities and was something the authority welcomed.

And it isn’t just the Hodgsons cashing in on the craze. Properties within a short walk of key filming locations have reportedly attracted higher-than-average asking prices over the past two years, with estate agents in Barry noting increased enquiries from buyers across England.

What happens next

The couple hope to have the property ready for its first guests by early summer. They’ve already had over 200 enquiries through social media alone, before a single listing has gone live.

As for whether they’ll ever move in permanently? Matt didn’t hesitate. “One hundred percent,” he said. “It’s Bryn’s house. That’s the dream.”
