Donaldson Trial: Prosecutor Says Ex-DUP Leader ‘Only One Lying’

A prosecutor has directly accused Sir Jeffrey Donaldson of being ‘the only one telling lies’ during a tense cross-examination at his sex abuse trial. The former Democratic Unionist Party leader, who denies all 18 charges against him including one count of rape, faced sharp questioning about inconsistencies in his testimony.

The confrontation at Newry Crown Court marked a dramatic escalation in proceedings that have gripped Northern Ireland’s political establishment. Donaldson, 62, stepped down from his role as DUP leader in March 2024 after being charged.

Credibility Under Attack

During cross-examination, the prosecutor challenged Donaldson’s account of events, pointing to alleged contradictions between his testimony and evidence presented by other witnesses. The prosecutor’s blunt assertion came after reviewing specific details about dates and locations central to the charges.

‘You are the only one telling lies,’ the prosecutor stated directly to Donaldson in court.

The charges against the former MP span multiple years and involve allegations of historical sexual offences. Donaldson represented Lagan Valley in Westminster from 1997 until his resignation from the DUP leadership. He has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the legal process.

Defence Maintains Innocence

Donaldson’s legal team has vigorously contested the prosecution’s case, arguing that the evidence doesn’t support the charges. The trial has heard from multiple witnesses over several days, with testimony covering incidents allegedly dating back years.

But the prosecutor’s direct challenge to Donaldson’s truthfulness represents a critical moment in the proceedings. Such confrontations are designed to test a defendant’s credibility before the jury, who will ultimately decide the case.

The former party leader sat in the dock as the prosecutor methodically worked through his testimony, highlighting what the prosecution characterised as implausible explanations and convenient memory lapses.

Political Fallout Continues

The trial has sent shockwaves through Northern Ireland’s political landscape. The DUP, which Donaldson led during crucial negotiations around the Windsor Framework and the restoration of Stormont’s power-sharing institutions, quickly moved to distance itself from the allegations.

A court official confirmed that proceedings are expected to continue for several more days, with closing arguments anticipated later this week. The jury will then retire to consider their verdict on all 18 charges.

Whatever the outcome, the trial has already left an indelible mark on one of Northern Ireland’s most prominent political figures and the party he once led. The case continues.
