Datacenter climate impact sparks urgent calls for reform

The climate impact of datacentres has moved firmly into the public debate, with readers, researchers and energy experts calling for sweeping changes to how the industry is regulated, powered and held accountable. Letters published in The Guardian this week laid bare growing frustration that one of the fastest-expanding sectors in the global economy is also becoming one of its most energy-hungry.

The scale of the problem

Datacentres currently consume around 1 to 1.5 percent of global electricity demand, according to the International Energy Agency. But that figure is expected to double by 2026, driven largely by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. A single large-scale AI training run can consume as much electricity as 100 average American homes use in an entire year. And the cooling systems required to stop servers from overheating add yet another layer of energy demand on top of that.

It’s a trajectory that many climate scientists say is simply incompatible with net-zero targets.

What readers and experts are demanding

The letters published in The Guardian reflect a broad coalition of concern. Some writers pushed for mandatory disclosure of energy consumption and carbon emissions from datacentre operators. Others called on governments to tie planning permissions for new facilities directly to renewable energy commitments. A number of correspondents pointed specifically to the role of big tech companies, arguing that voluntary pledges have consistently fallen short.

“We cannot keep treating datacentres as if they exist outside the normal rules of environmental accountability,” said one energy policy researcher who has been advising local councils on infrastructure planning. “They need to face the same scrutiny as any other major industrial facility.”

Still, some letter writers pushed back against purely punitive approaches, arguing that innovation within the sector — including more efficient chip design and advances in liquid cooling — could significantly reduce the carbon footprint without heavy-handed regulation.

The renewable energy gap

One recurring theme across the letters was the gap between tech companies’ clean energy claims and reality. Several major firms have committed to running on 100 percent renewable energy, but critics argue that purchasing renewable energy certificates doesn’t mean a datacentre is actually powered by clean electricity at every hour of the day. So-called 24/7 carbon-free energy matching — where consumption is matched to renewable generation in real time — remains the exception rather than the rule.

Ireland, which hosts a dense cluster of European datacentres, now sees those facilities consuming roughly 21 percent of the country’s total electricity. That number has raised serious questions among Irish policymakers about grid stability and whether renewables can realistically keep pace.

What happens next

Pressure is building on both sides of the Atlantic for binding regulation rather than voluntary commitments. The European Union is already moving toward mandatory energy efficiency reporting for large facilities under its Energy Efficiency Directive. In the UK, the conversation is still largely at the consultation stage.

Whether governments act quickly enough to bend the emissions curve before datacentre demand outpaces renewable supply remains the central question — and right now, the answer isn’t reassuring.
