UK-Iran dual national bailed in RAF Fairford bomb plot probe
A 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national arrested over an alleged bomb plot at RAF Fairford has been released on bail, counter-terrorism police said. The man was held on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 after being detained in Westminster, London, on Thursday.
Officers completed searches of two properties, and the investigation continues. Last weekend, five British nationals in their mid-20s were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism, then bailed. The arrests followed the discovery of three suspicious vans near the Gloucestershire military base.
Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, called the investigation “hugely complex” and said specialist teams were “interrogating multiple lines of inquiry.” She added: “As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement.”
PM Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” Iran played a part in the incident. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Israel handed Britain intelligence about a suspected “Iranian-sponsored attack” shortly before Britain announced a trade ban with illegal Israeli settlements.
