Asylum Seeker Who Raped Teenager Jailed for Nine Years
An asylum seeker convicted of raping a teenage woman has been sentenced to nine years in prison following a trial that gripped the local community.
Sheraz Malik, 28, was found guilty by a jury in January on two counts of rape against the 18-year-old victim. The attack occurred in March last year, leaving the young woman traumatized and requiring ongoing psychological support.
Details of the Attack
The court heard that Malik met his victim at a social gathering before isolating her from friends. He then subjected her to what the prosecution described as a ‘sustained and deliberate assault’ that lasted several hours.
She managed to escape and immediately contacted police.
Officers arrested Malik within 24 hours of the report. During questioning, he initially denied the allegations but later changed his account multiple times. The jury deliberated for just under six hours before returning guilty verdicts on both counts.
Impact on the Victim
A victim impact statement read to the court revealed the devastating effect the attack has had on the young woman’s life. She’s struggled to maintain her university studies and has required extensive counseling to cope with the trauma.
‘This was a calculated attack on a vulnerable young woman,’ the prosecutor told the court during sentencing. ‘The defendant showed no remorse and put the victim through the ordeal of a trial where she had to relive her trauma.’
The woman, who can’t be identified for legal reasons, didn’t attend the sentencing hearing. But her statement made clear she won’t let this define her future, though the scars remain.
Sentencing and Deportation
Judge Sarah Henderson handed down the nine-year sentence at crown court yesterday, calling Malik’s actions ‘abhorrent and predatory.’ He’ll serve at least two-thirds of the sentence before being eligible for parole.
The court also recommended Malik for deportation upon release. He arrived in the country three years ago and his asylum claim was still pending at the time of the offenses. Immigration authorities confirmed they’ll begin proceedings to remove him once he completes his sentence.
Malik showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down. He was immediately taken to begin his custodial term and will be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Support services said the case highlights the importance of reporting sexual assaults promptly. Victim support organizations remain available to anyone affected by similar crimes.
