Water Cannon Deployed as Belfast Knife Attack Sparks Disorder
Riot police fired water cannon on crowds in Belfast after coming under sustained attack in the latest bout of disorder following a knife attack in the area. Officers faced a barrage of bricks, bottles and pieces of wood at a major roundabout to the north-west of the city on Tuesday evening.
The violence erupted around 7:30pm and continued for more than two hours. Police Service of Northern Ireland units deployed water cannon at the scene as tensions escalated rapidly.
Hours of Sustained Attack
Riot officers formed lines at the roundabout as projectiles rained down on their positions. Footage from the scene showed at least 50 people gathered, with some masked individuals launching missiles towards police vehicles. The water cannon was deployed multiple times to push back advancing crowds.
Three police vehicles sustained damage during the disorder. No officers reported serious injuries, though several were treated for minor wounds at the scene. And while police made no immediate arrests, they’ve said they’re reviewing footage to identify those involved.
Knife Attack Sparked Unrest
The disorder follows a knife attack that occurred in the area earlier this week. Police didn’t confirm the exact connection between the incident and Tuesday’s violence, but local sources suggested the unrest was linked to community tensions that flared after the stabbing.
It’s the third night of disturbances in the area.
Monday night saw smaller-scale disorder with about 20 people throwing stones at passing vehicles. But Tuesday’s violence marked a significant escalation, with police forced to deploy their water cannon for the first time in eight months. The last deployment was during summer disorder in another part of the city.
Official Response
A PSNI spokesperson condemned the attacks, saying officers were „simply doing their jobs to keep communities safe.” The spokesperson added: „These attacks on police are attacks on the entire community. Those responsible showed complete disregard for residents who were left frightened in their own homes.”
Local politicians across parties called for calm. Yet there’s growing concern that tensions could escalate further if the underlying issues aren’t addressed quickly.
Police maintained a presence in the area overnight and said they’d be working with community leaders to prevent further disorder. Additional officers have been deployed to the north-west Belfast area for the remainder of the week. Authorities are urging anyone with information about those involved in Tuesday’s violence to come forward, with investigations ongoing into both the knife attack and subsequent disorder.
