Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips married NHS nurse Harriet Sperling on Saturday in a private ceremony that saw guests battling typical British weather with umbrellas as the couple exchanged vows.

The 47-year-old businessman and his 44-year-old bride tied the knot in front of close family and friends, with the ceremony taking place despite persistent rainfall throughout the day. Phillips, who’s the eldest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, chose a low-key affair for his second marriage.

A Very British Wedding Day

Guests arrived clutching umbrellas in various shades as rain fell steadily on the church grounds. Sperling wore a traditional white gown with delicate lace detailing and a flowing veil that required careful handling in the blustery conditions. But the weather didn’t seem to faze anyone.

The bride’s gown featured long sleeves and a modest neckline, reflecting her preference for understated elegance rather than royal grandeur. Phillips wore a classic morning suit, greeting guests with handshakes and smiles as they navigated puddles to reach the entrance.

Princess Anne attended the ceremony alongside her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. Phillips’ two daughters from his previous marriage to Autumn Kelly, 13-year-old Savannah and 12-year-old Isla, were also present to witness their father’s special day.

Yet the guest list remained deliberately small. Phillips has always maintained a relatively private life despite his royal connections, having declined a royal title at birth.

A palace source said the couple wanted „a simple, intimate celebration with those closest to them.”

From Hospital Ward to Royal Circle

Sperling has worked for the NHS for over 15 years, continuing her nursing duties even while planning the wedding. The couple met through mutual friends in 2021 and maintained a discreet relationship for several months before going public in 2023.

Phillips was previously married to Canadian-born Autumn Kelly for 12 years before their divorce was finalized in 2021. So this wedding marks a fresh chapter for the father of two.

The couple hasn’t announced honeymoon plans, though friends suggest they’ll take a brief break before returning to their respective professional commitments. Phillips runs a sports management company while Sperling has indicated she intends to continue her nursing career.

And despite the rain? Everyone agreed it was perfectly British, perfectly lovely, and exactly what the couple wanted.
