EU climate target on track but transport emissions remain stubborn
The European Union remains on course to meet its 55 per cent greenhouse gas reduction target by 2030, with cumulative emissions now 33 per cent below 1990 levels, according to the European Environment Agency’s annual climate progress report published on Tuesday.
The report does, however, identify two persistent weak spots: transport emissions, which have stagnated rather than fallen, and the buildings sector, where the renovation rate remains a fraction of what is needed.
‘Headline progress masks significant sectoral and Member State divergences,’ the report notes. Six Member States are projected to miss their effort-sharing targets without additional measures.
The findings will inform the next iteration of the National Energy and Climate Plans, which are due for finalisation later this year.
