Aberystwyth FC fine dining: Michelin-star chef joins Welsh club

One of Britain’s most celebrated chefs is heading to the terraces. Gareth Ward, the two-Michelin-star talent behind Ynyshir restaurant in mid-Wales, has announced a partnership with Aberystwyth Football Club that will bring high-end dining to a setting not exactly known for its tasting menus.

An unlikely pairing

Ward says the idea came naturally, given his deep roots in the region. Ynyshir, his acclaimed 16-seat restaurant near Machynlleth, has held two Michelin stars since 2022 and regularly features on lists of the UK’s finest dining experiences. Aberystwyth FC, meanwhile, competes in the Cymru North league — the second tier of Welsh football — and draws crowds of a few hundred on a typical matchday.

But Ward doesn’t see that as a contradiction. He’s calling the collaboration something “truly unique,” and it’s hard to argue with that description.

What fans can expect

Details on the full scope of the offering are still emerging, but Ward has made clear that the experience won’t be a halfway measure. Think carefully sourced local ingredients, the same obsessive attention to produce that has earned Ynyshir its reputation, brought into a matchday environment that most clubs couldn’t dream of offering.

It’s a genuine departure for both parties.

A spokesperson for Aberystwyth Football Club said the club was “thrilled” to be working with Ward and believed the partnership would help put the club on a wider map, both for football fans and for food lovers who might never have had a reason to visit before.

Ward’s vision for community and cuisine

Ward built his reputation on bold, sometimes provocative cooking. Ynyshir’s tasting menus run to more than 30 courses and can last upwards of four hours. Prices reflect the ambition — dinner for two typically exceeds £400. So bringing that ethos, even partially, to a non-league football club in west Wales is a striking move.

And yet it makes a kind of sense. Ward has always been vocal about his love for the Welsh landscape and its produce — the sea bass and salt marsh lamb that feature on his menus are sourced obsessively close to home. Aberystwyth sits roughly 15 miles from Ynyshir. This isn’t a London chef parachuting into the provinces for a PR moment. It’s a local story.

What comes next

The partnership is still in its early stages. No official launch date has been confirmed, and the precise format of the dining experience — whether it runs on matchdays, functions as a standalone event, or both — hasn’t been publicly finalised. Still, the announcement alone has generated significant buzz, not just among food writers but among football fans curious about what a Michelin-starred matchday might actually look like.

If Ward pulls it off, Aberystwyth FC won’t just be a football club. It’ll be a destination.
