Kirandeep Kaur killing: ‘She was my world’, sister says
Kirandeep Kaur was asleep beside her baby and husband when she was killed — a moment that has left her family in India shattered and searching for answers thousands of miles away.
The 28-year-old, who had been living in the UK, died in what police are treating as a targeted attack at a residential property in Wolverhampton in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Her infant child and husband survived. No one has yet been charged.
‘She was everything to us’
Kirandeep’s sister, speaking from the family’s home in Punjab, described her as irreplaceable. ‘She was my world,’ she said, her voice breaking during a phone call with reporters. ‘We are completely devastated. We don’t know how to live without her.’
The family said Kirandeep had moved to the UK roughly three years ago. She had recently given birth. By all accounts, she was happy. Her sister said she had spoken to Kirandeep just two days before her death and that she had sounded ‘normal, cheerful, like herself.’
That phone call is now the last memory they have of her alive.
What happened that night
Emergency services were called to the address in Wolverhampton at approximately 2.40am on Tuesday. Officers from West Midlands Police arrived to find Kirandeep unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her baby, believed to be under six months old, was physically unharmed. Her husband was treated for injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to confirm the exact cause of death. Detectives have launched a murder investigation and say they are pursuing several active lines of inquiry. So far, no arrests have been made.
Community in shock
Neighbours in the street where the attack occurred described the area as quiet, the kind of road where nothing like this ever happens. One resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard nothing that night. ‘I can’t believe it,’ she told reporters outside her front door. ‘There’s a baby involved. It’s just horrific.’
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family of the victim during this incredibly difficult time. We are working urgently to establish the full circumstances of this incident and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.’
A family waiting for justice
Back in Punjab, Kirandeep’s parents are reportedly too grief-stricken to speak publicly. Her sister has taken on the role of family spokesperson, asking British authorities to move quickly. ‘We want justice,’ she said. ‘She didn’t deserve this. She was a mother. She had just started her life.’
Kirandeep’s body has not yet been released by authorities, and the family is unclear when they will be able to bring her home to India for funeral rites. It’s a wait that her sister described as its own kind of agony.
Police are urging anyone who was in the area of Wolverhampton between midnight and 3am on Tuesday morning, or who has dashcam or doorbell footage, to contact them directly on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously.
